Creating a Calendar
The first step in getting organized, is to create a calendar. For some people, getting organized with a schedule comes naturally so everything in this article might not be for you, but you might learn some new ways to update what you currently do.
First, think of the activities you do in three categories:
- Things You Do Every Day (work, school, house work)
- Things You Do Once or Twice a Week (Family Activities, balance checkbook)
- Things You Do on Occasion (doctor's appointments, meetings)
Don't forget to include daily living activities like picking the kids up from school, household chores, and things that you would like to do like exercising and personal projects.
Second, go to your email (Outlook, Gmail, Hotmail, Windows Live) or contact management software (Act!) and click on the Calendar link. Add these activities to your calendar and don't forget to set the "recurrence." You will be able to choose how often you do these (daily, weekly, monthly) and edit these activities to replace them with items in the third category above. Some programs will also allow you to create multiple calendars.
Third, you can choose to print your calendar, connect it to a PDA or mobile phone and/or send yourself email reminders.
Fourth, at the beginning you should update your calendar as often as necessary to tweak your schedule and come up with something that allows you to fit in the fun stuff too.
