Using Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter
While organizing your computer files, you may have deleted some unnecessary files. Deleting them is just the beginning. In order to keep your computer running smoothly, you should run Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter.
What do they do for your computer?
Disk Cleanup searches for files that are not necessary but are taking up space (i.e. temporary internet files, files in the recycle bin, etc.) and deletes them from your computer. Deleting files and installing and uninstalling programs causes the files to be broken up in clusters. Disk Defragmenter consolidates fragmented files.
Here’s how to run these programs:
Disk Cleanup
Click on “Programs,” “Accessories,” “System Tools” and “Disk Cleanup.” A window will pop up asking which drive you want to clean; “C” is always highlighted. (You can also choose partitioned or external hard drives.) Once it finishes scanning the drive, it will tell you which files can safely be deleted. If you are not sure about a category, just uncheck the box. Click “OK.” If you are on the internet often, you should run Disk Cleanup on a weekly basis.
Disk Defragmenter
Click on “Programs,” “Accessories,” “System Tools” and “Disk Defragmenter.” Again, just like with Disk Cleanup, you can choose the drive you want to defragment. Click to highlight the drive and click “Analyze.” If the drive is fragmented over 10%, then click on “Defragment” to start the process.
You can use Windows Schedule Tasks also found in the System Tools folder to automatically run both programs at a scheduled day and time. Both of these System Tools will improve data access time and speed.

Renaming more than one file at a time. This comes in handy when organizing your photos.
This will add consecutive numbers to the end of the files so you know how many you have in the group.
So you are selling or donating your old computer. Maybe you just want to delete files with sensitive information. You delete all files and empty the Recycle Bin. You think that the files are completely gone; Think again! Unless you overwrite the hard drive, the files can be restored.
Eraser is a free download that overwrites the files multiple times making it impossible to recover.
