Every time you surf the web, download files, or open email attachments, you are facing the possibility of getting your computer infected with a virus, worm or trojan. You say you have anti-virus and anti-spyware programs installed on your computer that will take care of that. The question is: are you using them properly, if at all?
If you have a "security suite" installed, you most likely have both anti-virus and anti-spyware software. Having them on your computer is not enough. You must run scans on a regular basis to make sure that you don't have any infected files. Premium software will have settings that allow you to automatically schedule a particular day and time to run the scans; otherwise, you have to run them manually.
Besides installing anti–virus and anti–spyware software, check for software updates, turn on your firewall, make sure you do not click on pop–up ads while surfing the web, and don’t open any email attachments, unless it is something that you are expecting. Removing the “cookies” alone will remove many of the files that are downloaded while visiting websites. Just remember that doing so will also remove any saved user names and passwords that you have previously entered. Nothing can protect you 100 percent, but taking precautions can save you lots of grief later on.
